"KALINUSHKA" THE THIRD CHATER FROM EP "SIBERIAN TRILOGY PROJECT" BY MARIA MATVEEVA & DEEP FOREST IS ONLINE
 

The inspiration for the third chapter of my collaboration with Eric comes from an old cantilena that my great-grandmother Anastasia used to sing, a single verse handed down in memory to all the women of my family.

It is the expression of the strong pre-revolutionary popular charm of traditional Russia. 

​

For me it was an incredible experience because I was able to interpret a folk song from the popular Russian tradition for the first time since I was a child and I had a lot of fun doing it. 

​

From my voice Eric managed to create the atmosphere of a female traditional Russian choir  that fills the song with national color. 

​

The song recounts a sad tale and speaks of the bitter fate suffered by women at that time. Their lack of freedom meant they could not even choose their husbands. 

​

The part of the new lyrics differs from the original version. In addition to singing about these women’s difficult lives full of obstacles to overcome my version tells that difficulties of life made us stronge and we can all be the masters of our own destiny.
